Vitamin C has long been a highly popular vitamin among health gurus.

The benefits of Vitamin C are numerous, but its most prominent benefit is the fact that this vitamin can strengthen the immune system and help you fight the common cold and the flu. In addition, Vitamin C promotes healthy skin and teeth, plays a role in healing, and as an antioxidant, may even prevent strokes by fighting the process of aging. Because Vitamin A helps form collagen, it also performs an important role in the creation of skin, tissue, tendons, and ligaments.

Vitamin C’s antioxidant properties protect the body against free radicals. Not getting enough Vitamin C can be a problem as Vitamin C deficiency symptoms include things like dry skin and hair, decreased healing of wounds, easier bruising, and many other potential issues.

Fortunately, Vitamin C is easy to get. It can be found in citrus fruits like oranges, and Vitamin C supplements are generally regarded as pretty safe, since Vitamin C is a water-soluble making the chance of overdose relatively low. As with anything, however, it is possible to get too much vitamin C, and symptoms can include headaches, indigestion, and fatigue. It is unlikely you will have these side effects, however, unless you are taking massive quantities of Vitamin C.

The recommended intake of Vitamin C varies quite a bit depending on which expert you listen to. A typical recommended dosage is usually somewhere in the range of 500 milligrams a day. Some Vitamin C advocates, however, recommend much higher doses that go well into the thousands of milligrams.

There are plenty of sources of Vitamin C information on the web, and further research may be needed for you to determine whether you want to take Vitamin C supplements. As always, it is a good idea to consult your doctor as well.  Given the many benefits of Vitamin C, it is a very popular supplement for many people.
